Match Summary
The Senior Men were victorious against rivals Swinburne University on Saturday, winning by 19 points on a sunny day at Tony Sheehan Oval. The Trobers managed to kick away in the second half after a see-sawing first two quarters.
That see-sawing was more than apparent in the first term, with the two sides going goal for goal. Tiz Hillman opened the goal scoring in the game, crafting a left foot snap through the uprights. The Razorbacks responded quickly, but big man Hugo O’Callaghan calmly slotted a settler. Goals from Mitchell Collins and Toby Herbert gave the Trobers a narrow five-point lead at the first break.
The free scoring nature of the game died down somewhat in the second quarter, but it remained an intense and tight contest. Swinburne kicked the first to take the lead, only for Indy Williamson to respond eight minutes later to tie it up. A pair of late goals for either side, including a second for Tiz, ensured the half-time margin would remain in single digits, with the Trobers leading 38 to 34.
Another early goal to the visitors confirmed the second half would be no cakewalk. A tense following 15 minutes saw the contest become increasingly physically demanding, and it was the Trobers who came out on the other side of it. Mitchell Collins and Hugo O’Callaghan each kicked their second, before Jackson Gronow gave the hosts a 16-point lead just before three-quarter time. The Trobers performance in the third typified why they call it the ‘premiership quarter’.
There was no time to rest however, as The Razorbacks again started a quarter strongly, kicking the first two. Vice-captain Hugo O’Callaghan took a massive grab and went back to kick a crucial third goal for the game. His effort was followed by Tiz Hillman, who put away any doubts surrounding his goalkicking to extend the lead to 19 points. The win was sealed when the smallest man on the field, Liam Walsh, made a brilliant rundown tackle and won a 50-metre penalty before slotting the dagger. Swinburne kicked a late goal, but it proved merely a consolation as the Trobers won 12.6 – 78 to the Razorback’s 9.5 – 59.
Hugo O’Callaghan was awarded best on ground alongside Toby Herbert, Indy Williamson, Jade Russell, Liam Walsh, and Sam Benetti-Baker.

Match Summary
After a couple of weeks on the road the Trobers returned to the familiar setting of the Tony Sheehan Oval to take on fellow “Uni Club” Swinburne University. The Midday Show welcomed two mid-season recruits in Tom Burns and Gus McCaffrey for their first games.
The La Trobe boys started strongly and had almost everything on their own terms in the first quarter. The new recruits Tom and Gus got involved early, with Tom also kicking his first goal for the club. Lachlan Pike also snuck forward and snapped truly to kick his first for the day, but the man of “absolutely ran amok” in the forward line was Co-Captain Austin Bennett who kicked 4 goals for the quarter. La Trobe went into the quarter time break with a 27-point lead.
The less said about the 2nd quarter the better. As La Trobe’s defensive pressure dropped off The Razorbacks got their running game well and truly up and going, seeing them kick 6 unanswered goals to take a 11-point lead into halftime.
The messaging coming out of half-time was to get back to the disciplined football that saw them take the lead early in the game, and to protect the football, so they could control the game. The third term did see the Boys lift their defensive efforts, but La Trobe was unable to take advantage of their limited forward entries only adding 2 points for the quarter, but positive defensive work across the entire ground, led by Ned Uren, Ruben Cottee & Gus McCaffrey, saw us hold Swinburne to 3 points for the term. La Trobe went into the ¾ time break trailing by 10 points.
The messaging in the huddle was consistent with half-time – defensive pressure, protect the footy, and get the job done. And the Lads from La Trobe responded, the back 6 held strong with some important intercept marks from Ned Uren, Mark O’Brien and Nick Simons rebuffing a number of Swinburne forward entries. Up forward ‘Aussie’ was able to add another 2 goals to take his daily total to 6, and ‘Pikey’ once again showed some great forward craft to slot his second of the day. The last 5 minutes proved hectic, as La Trobe were down to 17 fit men, with injuries to Ben Peters, Bailey Walsh, Lachy Randall and the debuting Tom Burns, as well as back up ruckman Alex Crockford battling cramp. The boys flooded forward, and some great defensive efforts saw La Trobe repel a number of close calls as they held off Swinburne and held on for the 1-point victory!
