On Wednesday 13th March 2019 the La Trobe Sports Park Pavilion was officially opened by Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria. As part of the formal opening the new AFL oval was named in honour of Club Legend Tony Sheehan. 

Tony is a founding member of La Trobe University Football Club and has dedicated over 50 years of service to the Club since it’s beginning in 1967. The Tony Sheehan Oval is a grand representation of the football club and the amount of volunteer work that students of the University put into sport and the community. Tony played 321 games for the Club which is a Club Record, he also holds the Club Records as longest serving Senior Coach and Captain. He was the 1973 Captain Coach of the All Australian Intervarsity Team, 1976 Premiership Captain Coach of the La Trobe University Football Club, Captain Coach of the 1970’s Team of the Decade, and Playing Coach of the Team of the Half Century. 

On top of Tony’s impressive playing career he also embarked on an impressive political career. The Honourable Tony Sheehan completed an economics degree at La Trobe University and became a secondary school teacher and Secretary of the Victorian Secondary Teachers Association. Following his teaching career Tony moved to politics including, Victorian Legislative Assembly member for Ivanhoe 1982-85 and member for Northcote 1888-1998; Minister for Housing and Construction 1990-91; Minister for Finance 1991-92; and Treasurer of Victoria 1992.

Tony continues to be involved with the La Trobe University communities today while in retirement and the Club is extremely proud to have their new oval named after their Club Legend.
