Match Summary
La Trobe University produced a determined and exciting second-quarter fightback to overcome a slow start, going on to defeat Hawthorn by 12 points, 12.18 (90) to 12.6 (78), in Saturday’s Division 3 clash. It was a much needed and celebrated win after a tough couple of weeks!
The Hawks came out firing, booting the opening goal inside two minutes before dominating territory throughout the first term. The home team’s pressure and efficient ball movement saw them pile on four goals for the quarter, while La Trobe managed just the one major to trail by 20 points at the first break, Hawthorn 4.5 (29) to La Trobe 1.3 (9).
The Trobers found their feet in the second quarter and began to generate repeat inside 50s. Ronan Carr added his first and second in quick succession, with both shots from long range well beyond the arc, before Nathan Smith, Brandon Grech, Ben Freeman, Joshua Horder and Kyle Brizzi all hit the scoreboard as La Trobe outmatched Hawthorn for much of the quarter. In what was the Trobers’ best quarter this year, the boys sat well positioned overturning a deficit and taking a 22-point lead into half-time, Hawthorn 7.6 (48) to La Trobe 9.10 (64).
After the main break, La Trobe delivered some more strong footy for the afternoon. Austin Bennett sparked things up with a classy finish before Angus Tickner added another. Defensively, the Trobers lifted their pressure around the contest and limited The Hawks’ scoring opportunities, conceding just two goals for the quarter as Hawthorn cut the deficit to 14 points at the final change, Hawthorn 9.10 (64) to La Trobe 11.12 (78).
The final quarter became an arm wrestle as La Trobe continued to press. Luke McGowan converted an important goal midway through the term to keep Hawthorn at arm’s length, and many behinds via inaccurate kicking extended the gap slightly. Hawthorn, however, managed the clock well and responded with a crucial late goal to halt the momentum, however La Trobe held on for a 12-point victory.
Ryan Cole was outstanding in the ruck, giving La Trobe first use around the stoppages and competing strongly all afternoon. Brandon Grech continued his excellent season with another influential performance, while Kade Rowe and Coach Andy Castles worked tirelessly across four quarters. Austin Bennett provided a constant target inside 50 with two goals, Luke McGowan had an impact around the ground and on the scoreboard, and Lachlan Pike impressed with another composed performance.

Match Summary
After a solid week of training at the newly named K. E. Bond Reserve, the La Trobe Senior Women travelled to E. E. Gunn Reserve for a 2 p.m. start against Ormond on what was a warm day in the sun, and cold day in the shade.
Elise Freeman has been finding great form with her pre-game rev ups, as the Trobers were sent out to battle after discovering a petition to build a Sam Greene statue located near the great Tony Sheehan Oval.
The first quarter began, and La Trobe were immediately forced onto the back foot. Ormond struck early and kicked 4 goals in the opening quarter. A response was needed in the second quarter if the Trobers were any chance of finding a pathway to victory.
Unfortunately, similar scenes followed to finish the first half. The home team had all the momentum, and forced a high volume of repeat entries, in addition to their ability to control the airways. It wasn’t the first half we were looking for, and a tough result to take was well and truly on the cards.
Trailing 55 to 0 at half time, the second half became a test of the Trobers resilience. Missing multiple key players on the day, there were opportunities for others to step up in their absence.
The response from La Trobe in the third was as gritty as it gets. On what easily could have been a day where the heads dropped and the effort diminished, we witnessed a team go toe-to with a quality outfit on their own ground. An argument could be made La Trobe were the better side in the 3rd quarter, despite losing the quarter on the scoreboard 7 to 3.
It was a purple patch for Makayla D’Angelo, whose presence on the field was integral to an energetic resurgence in the quarter. The clean hands, tackling, and ability to smother was second to none, and it certainly inspired her teammates on the ground.
Eve Conlan has backed up her classy performances at training and competed strongly at ground level and in the air. The decision making from Eve both with and without the ball is improving weekly, as she is becoming a consistent and reliable performer in defence.
The last quarter saw La Trobe battle right until the end, who dug deep to only go down by 70 points, which is a great effort considering the margin at half-time, in addition to the number of players each side had at their disposal.
Jasmine Smith had a stellar performance, which highlighted her physicality around the contest and got her hands to the footy first under duress. Jas spent time on both the wing and across the forward flank and had a great influence in the second half with both her metres gained, and kicks inside 50.
Captain Jess Lowry battled relentlessly in the ruck all day, having a high percentage of the hit-out numbers and giving her midfielders an opportunity to impact at stoppage. Jess was backed up well in the ruck by Matilda Wilson, who was dealing with shoulder/arm pain, but still provided a great option long down the line and took some fantastic, contested marks.
Madi Duffy was given the challenge of going up against one of the league’s most damaging small forwards, and despite her opponent kicking majors on the day, Madi never gave up, and did a tremendous job. It’s an experience that will benefit her development, as Madi is another young player that is growing and adding to her game at a high rate.
A return to Tony Sheehan Oval awaits the Trobers next weekend, where the team will be looking to add to their 100%-win percentage at home in the Winter Season. Next week’s opponent Oakleigh sits one spot above the La Trobe Senior Women in what will be a great contest between 7th and 8th.

Match Summary
The Midday Show was on the road for the second last time of the home and away season heading to Rathmines Road Reserve where we took on Hawthorn. The Trobers were captained by fullback Campbell Luck, and his first game as skipper was arguably one of our better performances for the season even with an undermanned side which saw coach Michael Correnti lace up the boots. Our first matchup against The Hawks saw the Trobers go down by 79 points but in an honourable loss that saw us trailing by no more than 4 points at each break, we just ran out of legs to finish the fourth term and The Hawks made some expert defensive changes.
The first term saw the Trobers start slow, with The Hawks kicking the first two, but after some good passages of play in the midfield which saw Finlay Stewart and Sam O’Donnell linking up to find Giovanni Minniti, he expertly lowered his eyes for a beautiful inside forward 50 kick to ruckmen Alex Crockford who got to have a shot 25 metres straight in front of goal, where he proceeded to kick the Trobers first of the day. The Trobers fell back onto their defensive pressure keeping The Hawks scoreless after the seven-minute mark of the term, with wingmen Saxon Dwyer and Tate Tregea-Copeland laying countless tackles and spoils to prevent the home team from transitioning. After a quick rebound play, forward Atticus Corr picked up a loose ball inside the Trobers forward fifty which gave him the opportunity to kick the Trobers second of the day and he proceeded to kick truly.
Going into the second term the Trobers held a one-point lead which quickly turned into a one goal lead after three different Hawthorn players proceeded to give up 50 metre penalties to full back Bryce Dowler, taking him from a kick in, to 20 metres from goal, where he proceeded to kick the opening goal of the second term. Midfielder Ruben Cottee took a mark deep in the pocket on an incredibly tough angle from goal, but trusting in his ability to finish in front of goal, Roo skilfully put it through for the Trobers second of the term. After some lapses in our defence the Hawthorn full forward managed to have a huge term, kicking three, leaving us trailing by a point going into halftime.
The messaging at halftime from player/coach Michael Correnti was that our defensive pressure was good apart from a few lapses, and for our forward line to communicate better, as we were leading into each other’s space, and we could better utilise newly returned forward Callum Randell. But from our Round 1 experience against The Hawks, we knew that after halftime was where we struggled last time, and we just needed to continue that first half pressure.
The third term began similar to our first-round matchup, with Hawthorn kicking the opening two of the term, but the Trobers still had some fight, and Callum Randell ended the Trobers second half goal drought. The Trobers again fell into their defensive mode which rewarded us with forward fifty entries, but the Trobers could only convert minor scores for the majority of the term. Callum Randell took a mark 80 metres from goal on a wing as the siren sounded to end the term, as he was preparing for what was arguably an impossible shot at goal, one of the Hawthorn players ran over the mark conceding another 50 metre penalty, putting Cal well within distance, where he proceeded to kick truly after the siren, to keep the Trobers within four points going into the final term.
The fourth term saw the Trobers have two early opportunities but failed to convert, until midfielder Ruben Cottee popped up again deep in a pocket, on what again we thought was an impossible angle, but Roo again showing off his amazing skills by foot, kicked truly to put the Trobers back with striking distance. Unfortunately, Hawthorn upped the pressure, and it became increasingly difficult to transition the ball up the ground, keeping the ball locked in their forward half for the final ten minutes of the term. The Trobers kept fighting but being unable to transition the ball and with a few untimely turnovers The Hawks were able to add two more majors, seeing us go down by 17 points.
Ultimately not the result we wanted, but seeing the improvement of the side from our Round One match up, to where we are deep into the season is amazing. Well done to all the boys for sticking with it and buying into our system.
