Round 12 Match Reports (2024)

This week the Senior Women played Old Carey away, in what was termed redemption week following a tight loss to them in Round 4. Also this week after a long wait due to injury and holidays the La Trobe women celebrated Jocelyn ‘Joce’ Yew’s 50th game in the red and black.

The first quarter started off as a tight contest with Issy ‘The Pest’ Warrillow quickly getting under the skin of the Old Carey by her tight and persistent defending. The home team were able to score two quick goals by switching the play out the back during the quarter. This was matched by the consistent performing first year forward Alex Ingram scoring the first goal of the game for us and the ever reliable Ineka Hart sneaking a second one in before quarter time.

The second quarter remained a tough contest with the Old Carey girls pushing the ball forward quickly via any means possible, scoring another two goals. Through a tight contest in the midfield and hard work by winger Marleigh ‘Merl’ Andrews La Trobe was able to fight back. In her fiftieth game Jocelyn Yew stood up and scored our only goal for the quarter. However, this still meant the Trobers went into the long break down by ten points with the score at LTUFC  3.1 (19) to Old Carey 4.5 (29)

After halftime coach Sam Greene moved the magnets with captain Teresa D’Angelo moving into the forward line. Throughout the third quarter Kate Bond and Swifty led with their over 200-games experience to try and push La Trobe into the lead culminating in Teresa scoring our only goal for the third quarter. However, Old Carey just kept coming and were also able to score one goal to keep their lead at 8 points  going into the last break. LTUFC 4.3 (27) to Old Carey 5.5 (35)

In the final quarter the girls continued to fight hard against a physical Old Carey however, the home team were able to continue to score and extend their lead even with two last quarter goals to Captain Swifty. At the end La Trobe ran out of legs allowing the margin to grow further just before the final siren.

Final Score: LTUFC 6.4 (40) to Old Carey 9.6 (60)
