La Trobe University endured a difficult afternoon at Tony Sheehan Oval, with ladder leaders Wattle Park showcasing why they sit atop the Division 3 competition in a commanding 126-point victory.

Despite the final margin, the Trobers competed hard early and were able to create some scoring opportunities in the opening term, however only contributing minor scores. Wattle Park’s relentless forward pressure, however, quickly began to tell as the visitors piled on four goals to establish a 27-point lead at the first break.

The second quarter proved decisive. The Animals produced an avalanche of eight unanswered goals to completely seize control of the contest. La Trobe finally broke through when Ronan Carr converted the visitors’ first major at the 12-minute mark, before Luke McGowan added another goal later in the term, but the damage had already been done as Wattle Park headed into half-time with a commanding 70-point advantage.

Any hopes of a second-half response were quickly extinguished as The Animals maintained their intensity after the main break. Austin Bennett registered La Trobe’s only score of the third quarter with an early behind, while the away side continued to dominate field position and convert their opportunities, stretching the margin beyond 90 points heading into the final term.

The Trobers continued to compete until the final siren, but Wattle Park’s class and ball movement proved too much to contain. They finished strongly with another four goals to cap off a strong 20.23 (143) to 2.5 (17) victory.

With the scoreboard making for tough reading, La Trobe will look to regroup quickly ahead of next week’s clash. The Trobers showed patches of resilience throughout the afternoon but were ultimately outplayed by a polished Wattle Park outfit that punished turnovers and capitalised on its dominance around the contest.
