Match Summary
After the immense disappointment of last week’s result, the Senior Men were determined to grab a much-needed win against Swinburne University on their home deck at St James Park. Beau Lawrence was back and Will Barnes, our 2023 Reserves Best & Fairest winner, was making his La Trobe senior debut! Coach Andy Castles’ pre-game message was all about working for each other and bringing the fun and enjoyment back into our game. The weather and ground conditions were as expected – shizenhousen. Heavy conditions in many parts of the ground with a vast Merri Creek bog in the centre square!
The opening term started well with ruck Hugo O’Callaghan on the job and our midfielders Jonty Randall, Archie Conboy, Sam Benetti-Baker and Lachlan Webb working hard at the stoppages. The Razorbacks added an extra player to their backline and many of our inside 50s were rebounded far too easily. The home team’s inaccuracy kept the Trobers in the game as they got on top early to establish a 15-point margin by the first break. Unfortunately, Bailey Walsh’s return to the side was marred by injury which had him heading to hospital and the Trobers down a forward rotation for the remainder of the game.
Not to be deterred, our lads hit back hard in the second quarter with a blistering run of goals. Tirian Hillman got us on the board, followed by Beau Lawrence, Andy Castles, Beau for his second, Tate Spiteri, Beau added his third for the quarter and we had our noses in front at the main break and full of run and confidence.
The rain intensified in the third term making forward momentum and scoring extremely challenging with repeated stoppages and boundary throw-ins. The Razorbacks failed to register a goal as our back 6, led by Connor McCredden, closed down their scoring opportunities while Adam Zimmermann added the Trobers’ only major for the quarter as we took a 9-point lead into the three-quarter time break.
Unfortunately, the Trobers were not in the hunt in the final term as the heavy conditions, reduced rotations and bigger bodied opponents saw the home team add 4.3 to 0.3 to win by 15 points. Whilst the team played the game out to the final minutes, it was another disappointing loss despite the hard work and playing some of our best footy in recent weeks.
Jonty Randall, Archie Conboy, Connor McCredden, Sam Benetti-Baker, Beau Lawrence and Liam Walsh were named as the best players.

Match Summary
Round 14 saw the Trober women head to W. R. Ruthven V. C. Reserve to take on the Preston Bullants for the first time this season. The women were looking like they had all spent the last month in Europe with some ripper tans being put on show ahead of the LTUFC Ball.
With the help of a strong wind blowing straight down the field, the Bullants were able to open the scoring fairly early in the first quarter and keep the Trober women scoreless. Strong defensive efforts from the women kept the home team to just the 1 goal in the first quarter.
The tables turned in the 2nd quarter and the women were able to kick into gear and make the most of the wind advantage. With directions coming from the vice-captain Jess “JLo” Lowry, the Trobers were able to execute the best clearance of the day and open their scoring within the first 30 seconds of the quarter. An elite tap down from JLo, hot hands from Kate “Bondy” Bond and slick kicking from Teresa “Swifty” D’Angelo led the ball straight into Ineka “Harty” Hart’s hands who was able to slot it through the big ones. The fine form was continued for the quarter with dominant performances coming from the midfield. The Trobers were able to head into half time with an 11-point lead.
The third quarter was more of a battle as the team were kicking into the wind, but they were able to maintain their strong performance and keep the Bullants to just the 1 behind, while adding an extra goal to their own tally. Makayla “Mik” D’Angelo hit her straps in the third having a dominant 20 minutes.
The final quarter saw coach Sam Greene challenge the women to a big scoring quarter, and that they did adding an extra 3 majors to extend their lead to 34 points to finish the game.
Overall, a dominant performance from the whole side to enter the final few games of the home and away season on a high.
Best players went to Kate Bond, Jessica Lowry, Makayla D’Angelo, Teresa D’Angelo, Yasmine Budic and Charlotte Croome.

Match Summary
Round 14 saw The Midday Show hit the road and take on The Razorbacks at a wet & boggy St James Park in Hawthorn. The Reserves entered the match needing to win to keep their slim finals hopes alive.
The first quarter saw the Trobers start strongly as a Cam “Suga” Marcroft tap led to a quick clearance from Ben Freeman, which ended with Mitch Collins taking a strong mark in the wet and kicking truly to get the ball rolling for the boys from Bundoora. Unfortunately, that was the only goal La Trobe kicked for the quarter as some strong forward movement would not get taken advantage of. The Trobers trailed by 7 points at quarter-time.
As the rain started to set in our midfield, led by Sam “Scooba” O’Donnell and Jade Russell, worked extremely hard at the coal face but we were unable to kick a goal during the second quarter and Swinburne stretched their lead out to 19 points.
Halftime saw the coaching staff swing Austin “Aussie” Bennett forward, which worked with great effect as he slotted two goals for the quarter. A courageous mark from wingman Kane Newby running back with the flight saw La Trobe gain some forward momentum, but unfortunately Swinburne would see the momentum swing their way later in the quarter to maintain a 20-point lead at three quarter-time.
After Coach Mick Correnti asking for 25 more minutes of hard contested footy, the Trobers fought hard and thanks to the defence, led by Mark “Mobbla” O’Brien and Harry Baker, we were able to hold Swinburne to a solitary goal for the term, but once again found scoring in the wet very difficult as we only scored two behinds for the quarter and went down by 24 points.
Sam O’Donnell, Cam Marcroft, Jade Russell, Mark O’Brien, Kane Newby and Harry Baker were named as the best players.
