Match Summary
In Round 14, the seniors faced Wattle Park with aspirations of turning around their previous result against this quality side. With five players unavailable from Round 13, Josh Guy, Ben Freeman, Sam O’Donnell, Xavier Scott, and Tirian Hillman were all recalled from the reserves following strong form.
Conditions were overcast with a very strong breeze blowing towards the city end of Tony Sheehan Oval. Co-captain Connor McCredden won the toss and chose to kick with the breeze to start the game. The first quarter was a tightly contested affair, with the first goal going to Wattle Park. This was closely followed by a goal from Andy Castles to level the scores. The Animals continued to press into the breeze, scoring two goals in quick succession. Indy Williamson had a chance late in the quarter but unfortunately missed his shot. La Trobe finished the quarter down by 11 points, with a tough task awaiting them in the second as the breeze picked up.
In the second quarter, Wattle Park moved quickly to add two goals to their tally, and it looked like they would make full use of the breeze. However, a Liam Walsh goal brought the momentum back for the home side. Due to other matchups around the ground, Walshy moved into the forward line rotation, which proved dynamic—especially at ground level—where he was able to move through with speed and become a genuine attacking option. Wattle Park answered again before Jack Miller snuck forward, taking a mark in front of goal. What would usually be an easy set shot from about 18 metres out was made difficult by the wind, but Miller rose to the challenge and slotted it straight through the middle.
Hugo O’Callaghan was a massive contributor when kicking against the breeze. He worked hard in defence, taking multiple intercept marks and controlling the air across half-back. His hard work in the pre-season has allowed him to cover a lot of ground, making him one of the premier ruckmen of Division Three and a vital cog in the La Trobe senior team. Unfortunately, The Animals again found an answer, goaling to stretch the margin out to 29 points just before halftime. Cameron Marcroft had an opportunity to make it three goals into the breeze for La Trobe but wasn’t able to finish his work.
The third quarter was the Trober’s chance to get back into the hunt. Indy Williamson played significantly more midfield minutes with the absence of co-captain Sam Benetti-Baker, who suffered a broken nose the week before thanks to an Albert Park elbow! Indy has become a difficult match-up in the middle as he can wheel out on either foot and is ultra-damaging with the ball. Wattle Park started the quarter with the first goal, but La Trobe soon found their mojo. The first goal for the Trobers came from captain Connor McCredden, who snuck forward and took a strong mark 30 metres out, directly in front. He kicked truly and kick started a chain of attacking play. Next was Jack Miller, wheeling out of a stoppage on his trusty left and nailing the shot—making it two in a row. Two minutes later, it was Indy Williamson cashing in on his hard work, ripping the ball from a stoppage and slotting it from a tight angle. Unfortunately, Wattle Park found a reply with two quick goals. Indy responded again with another major, building an incredible game, but the visitors replied once more with two more goals, proving their consistency and relentless pressure.
With Wattle Park kicking with the breeze to start the last quarter, it was always going to be a tough task to reel them in. They proved too classy, finishing with 9 goals to 0 in the final term. This result felt like a step back for the seniors, losing by a greater margin than in the previous meeting. Once again, a half of competitive footy wasn’t enough against one of the top sides in the division. Still, there were individual performances worth highlighting. Hugo O’Callaghan and Connor McCredden led the side well and continue to put together ultra-consistent seasons. Indy Williamson had another superb game, looking right at home both in the midfield and up forward. Tiz Hillman had a tough assignment on Wattle Park wingman Matthew Hill and fought on valiantly. Jonty Randall took on the task of shutting down Wattle Park’s running machine Harry Davis, while Josh Guy was impressive on return from the reserves.
The boys will need a big week on the track as they look to bounce back in Round 15 against North Brunswick—a game many of the boys believe is a winnable one!

Match Summary
The Midday Show returned to the familiar surroundings of Tony Sheehan Oval to take on fellow finals contender Wattle Park.
Skipper Austin Bennett won the toss and the Trobers kicked with a strong breeze blowing to the lower playing field end.
Some strong play through the midfield from Brandon Grech helped Ben Morse get us off to a positive start, Bryce Dowler would lay a massive chase down tackle to get himself on the scoreboard, Austin Bennett would also kick truly, and not to leave his influence in the midfield Brandon Grech would also hit the scoreboard to help La Trobe build a 25 point lead at the break. Unfortunately, the first term didn’t all go the Trobers way with new recruit Pub Weerakkody going down with a knee injury and would miss the remainder of the game.
The second term saw the roles reversed as The Animals got on top and were able to take full advantage of the breeze to kick 5 goals for the term. La Trobe were able to score one against the breeze thanks to Jack Crowe. A highlight for the quarter saw Mitch Wallace serve up a bone crunching bump, before spinning out of the contest and helping move the ball forward. The half time break saw the scores level – 7.3 apiece.
The Premiership quarter saw La Trobe once again kicking with a strong breeze. The Trobers once again started strongly, with Kyle Brizzi, Aussie Bennett, Bruce Doull and Brandon Grech hitting the scoreboard. La Trobe went into the final break with a 3 goal lead.
The messaging out of the final break huddle was to be disciplined and lock the game down to bring home the four points. We were down to only 1 man on the bench, after Harry Skantzos unfortunately pulled up limp.
The Midday Show were more than up to the task, holding Wattle Park to just 3 points for the term, whilst scoring a goal ourselves thanks to an Elliot Stevenson snag. The team’s defensive discipline can be highlight by the efforts of a few of the boys in the final term.
Austin Bennett and Finlay Stewart, took numerous intercept marks and rebound many a Wattle Park attack. Kyle Brizzi and Elliot Stevenson didn’t let their small stature stop them from taking some ruck contests and competing heartily against the Wattle Park big man. Brodie McDermott was a warrior in the midfield, chasing stoppage after stoppage, and helping the Trobers gain forward momentum.
Trobers win by 22 points!
