Match Summary
Our Round 16 clash saw us head to St James Park in Hawthorn to take on rivals Swinburne University. The boys were looking forward to making it two wins this season against The Piggies and cementing our spot above them on the ladder. This would take our season win total to six—doubling last year’s output.
Captain Connor ‘Turtle’ McCredden won the toss and elected to kick to the Burwood Road end, which the Trobers made full use of. Indy Williamson hit the scoreboard inside the first minute to give us the ideal start, followed by two goals from the boot of wily forward Tate Spiteri. Swinburne were able to hit back with one themselves after a tight quarter, but the Trobers went into the first break with a small buffer.
The second quarter was a lot tighter, with both teams trading blows and the game being played mostly between the arcs. Hugo O’Callaghan was dominant in the air once again and added a goal to his tremendous performance. Indy Williamson again found the big sticks and looked dangerous whenever he was playing on-ball. Swinburne made the most of their chances and closed the margin to 8 points at half-time. Some inaccurate kicking throughout the quarter left the Trobers confident that if they took their chances, they could win the game.
In a tightly contested third quarter, Toby Herbert nailed his first for the game and Indy bagged his third a short time later, but Swinburne took the honours and levelled with the Trobers heading into the last break. Luke Vaughan had taken on the challenge of stopping Swinburne power forward and captain Simon Heather and was exceptional, barely giving him a sniff.
The last quarter would prove to be very eventful and undoubtedly the best quarter the seniors have played all year. Liam Brunton had run riot for Swinburne in the first three quarters and looked poised to win the game for them, but backman Adrian Marulli had other ideas—locking down the tall midfielder and minimising his impact in the final term.
Tate Spiteri added his third for the game inside the opening minute as the Trobers took back the lead. The Coach had made it clear in the three-quarter time huddle to expect a couple of goals from Swinburne, and they followed Spitta’s goal with two of their own early in the quarter to edge in front. Luckily, the Trobers didn’t panic, and goals from Coach Andy Castles and Tirian Hillman allowed them to hit the lead heading into red time. Late goals from Spiteri and Vice-Captain Liam Walsh iced the game.
This was a huge win where every Trober stood up and contributed. The coaching staff were left extremely proud, with real growth beginning to emerge.

Match Summary
Round 16 saw the Trobers head to Hawthorn to take on fellow “Uni Club” Swinburne. La Trobe rolled into St James Park looking to cement its spot in the Top 4 and for the Reserves to return to the finals for the first time since 2022. We would also be looking to celebrate game 50 of our Defensive General and former Captain, Laughlin Cargnali.
The first quarter was an arm wrestle as both sides tried their best to get the game on their own terms. La Trobe’s midfield battled hard all over the ground, with Brandon Grech and Brodie McDermott winning clearances at will. Skipper Austin Bennett kicked our first, before co-coach Cal Randell, Ruben Cottee and the man who truly values his privacy James Driffield also kicked majors. Some late goals to The Razorbacks would cut into the margin and give the Trobers a 1-point lead at the end of the first term.
The 2nd term started much the same as the first, the La Trobe midfield continued their strong play and the back six started to get on top thanks to some strong play from Xavier Scott, Sam O’Donnell and Laughlin Cargnali. Brandon Grech kicked a running snap to open our account. Cal Randell added another 2 to his total after a couple of strong contested marks, while James Driffield kicked his second, as did Austin Bennett and Ruben Cottee. Trobers headed into the main break with a 20-point lead.
The messaging at half-time was to continue our strong play and set the tone from the first contest after the break. The third term saw Swinburne lift their defensive efforts across the ground leading to the premiership quarter becoming an arm wrestle. La Trobe added two majors for the term through Cal Randell and James Driffield, to take a 19-point lead into the final break.
The final term saw Swinburne find another gear as they disintegrated the Trobers lead and the scores being level with only a few minutes to go. Enter Brodie McDermott who hit the front of the contest with speed and snapped truly to give La Trobe the lead. The Trobers held on to take home the 6-point win.
