Match Summary
On Saturday the Senior Men travelled to take on Wattle Park at Bennettswood Reserve in Burwood.
The boys were looking to get back on the winners list after a tight loss to Albert Park last week, and it started well as Mitch Collins kicked the first goal in the first 3 minutes of the game to get the boys going. The Animals hit back kicking the next two goals of the game but Blake Edwards kicked a settler to put the boys up early in the first. Wattle Park added the next two which saw them lead by 11 points at quarter time.
The second quarter was completely dominated by the home side after Blakey kicked his second and La Trobe’s only goal for the quarter as Wattle Park piled on 7 goals to lead by 51 points at half time.
It was a similar story in the third quarter as Mitch Collins kicked his second and our only goal for the term, and The Animals built an 84-point lead by the final break.
The boys fought hard in the last quarter with Elliot Stevenson kicking a goal on debut and Sam Benetti-Baker also added a goal as the boys lost the last quarter by just 2 points, and the final margin was 86 points.
Best players for the day were Jonty Randall, Hugo O’Callaghan, Connor McCredden, Sam Benetti-Baker, Jack Miller and Toby Herbert. Mitch and Blakey kicked 2 goals each, with singles to Stevo and BB.

Match Summary
Well it was a great morning to be a duck and the ducks were the women’s first opponents on Tony Sheehan Oval when they went out to commence their warm up as the heavy rain belted down. The women took on newly relegated Hawthorn which looked to be a tight and scrappy contest in the wet conditions.
We celebrated Captain Jess Lowry’s 50th game which gave the women more of an incentive to get the 4 points for her. JLo, as always, gave our midfielders first look at the football and set them up to move the ball inside 50. The mids continued their strong start to the season with Makayla D’Angelo and Steph Castagnini setting the bar with their fierce tackling and clearance work.
Ineka Hart started the game full of confidence, attacking the ball hard and her highlight was a chase down tackle in our goal square where she was awarded a free kick and went back and slotted the goal. Thara Sar played another ripper, covering a lot of the ground, applying exceptional pressure and seeing plenty of the pill. Madi Duffy showcased what she learned at training, punching the ball away from her opponent and being prolific in the backline.
Jess Rogers must have carried a ball magnet of some sort with her, because she seemed to find the ball every time she turned around, playing one of her best games in the red and black. Teresa D’Angelo was back to her best in the forward line after returning from a broken finger last week, finishing with two classy goals and Marleigh Andrews kicked a nice goal on the run.
The women finished the game with a solid 29-point victory, keeping Hawthorn goalless for the game. It was a very strong team performance, showcasing the sheer depth of the squad.
Congratulations again to JLo on a stellar 50 games in the red & black!
We look to next week when we take on Aquinas at Aquinas College.

Match Summary
The Trobers hit the road again as The Midday Show ventured out to Bennettswood Reserve, in the shadows of Deakin University’s Burwood Campus, to take on 3rd placed Wattle Park.
The pre-game messaging focused on winning the hard ball in the wet conditions and bringing the defensive pressure. La Trobe started strongly as the midfield, led by skipper Austin Bennett, got on top early gaining clearances across the ground. James Boussounis trapped a loose ball in the forward line, kicked the ball goalward, and thanks to some great shepherding work on the line from Bryce ‘Brucey’ Dowler, kicked his first goal for the club. Speaking of Big Brucey, he also worked hard and got on the end of a couple of strong forward entries to slot two majors for the quarter. Trobers entered the first break with a 4-point lead.
The second term saw The Animals start to gain a little more access to the ball across the ground, but thanks to some great tackling and defensive work, led by Ruben Cottee in the midfield and Josh Horder down back, we were able to stop Wattle Park from taking full advantage. Some great ball use from Kyle Brizzi saw him with a goal assist, as he hit up Jayden ‘JJ’ Jacobson who marked strongly and kicked truly to slot our only goal for the term. La Trobe went into the sheds at half-time trailing by 13 points.
The challenge from the coaching staff at half-time was to lift the tackle pressure around the ground and use the ball smartly to chew into the home team’s lead. The boys worked hard with some great outside run provided by vice-captain Ben Freeman, as the Trobers kicked an early one thanks to Big Brucey taking a strong mark and kicking truly. La Trobe kicked their only other goal for the term thanks to some great front and square work from Lachlan Pike. Unfortunately for the Trobers, Wattle Park were able to take full advantage of their forward entries extending their lead to 24 points at ¾ time.
The challenge out of the huddle was to commit to the hard ball, embrace the contest, and push hard to bring home the 4 points. The Trobers started well winning an early clearance, and thanks to a goal line mark from Fin Stewart, which turned into a checkside goal from the pocket and La Trobe got within 3 goals. The quarter would then turn into a goal for goal arm wrestle, with La Trobe kicking another 2 goals for the term thanks to Ruben Cottee and Ernie Fan, but The Animals kicked 4 goals themselves, resulting in them running out 27-point winners.
