Match Summary

At home again this week and it was good to be on an oval with grass and not mud. The one thing last week’s venue had on us though was working toilets. Bit of a shambles this week with the thunder boxes!

Hawthorn got off to a hot start kicking away to an early lead at quarter time however, the next two stanzas were a tighter affair. The Hawks kicked away again in the last quarter running away as 10 goal winners. The game was a closer tussle than the scoreboard suggested and it was an improved performance from the last time we played at Hawthorn in Round 1.

Ernie Fan was a constant presence with his harassing and tackle pressure, while Matt Ogle and Lachlan ‘Webjet’ Webb are continuing their great form out of the guts which is good to see. The latter also taking home the chocolates in the iPod Shuffle later in the night. Hugo O’Callaghan is also coming along in leaps and bounds, with the gaffer Ricky Nolan announcing that he has signed him to a ten year deal!

Another little shout out to Sam ‘Scooba’ O’Donnell who performed admirably after turning up late to the club function.

Match Summary

Round 7 saw us take on Hawthorn for the second time this season, hosting them at home, as we looked to pick up our second win of the season. The Trobers started off strongly in the first quarter with decisive forward movement resulting in us slotting two goals to take a 5 point lead into the quarter-time break. Naz Oliyath and Kane Newby were the players who kicked truly to help open our account.

The second term saw The Hawks lift their intensity and attacking play. Our defence, led by Mark O’Brien, held up well allowing only 2 goals under very heavy pressure. La Trobe kept up their hard running and attack on the ball, led by Connor Burns and the midfield, but were unfortunately unable to turn that into positive scoring momentum being kept goalless for the term. Hawthorn led by 8 pts at half-time.

The message at half-time was that the boys were in this match up to their ears, and to maintain our intensity and tackling pressure for the rest of the game and we could bring the 4 points home. This did not end up being the case as Hawthorn lifted a gear and we were unable to go with them at times, seeing them add 36 points for the quarter. In some positive news for the term, Naz Oliyath kicked his second goal for the day. Three-quarter time saw the Trobers trailing by 38 points.

The final term saw coach Mick Correnti implore the boys to get back to our intensity and tackling pressure from the first half, and there was no reason the deficit couldn’t be turned around. The final term did see plenty of run from our wingmen/half forwards Kane Newby, Conall Barrett and Tirian Hillman. Conall finished off his good day by kicking an inside-out barrel from the boundary to score one of our two goals for the term. The second goal coming from our ruckman turned roving forward Brendan Plowman – as Plow hit the pack with pace, picked the ball up off his bootstraps and kick truly. Word after the game was that the footage may be used in future lessons on how to kick a roving goal.
