Round 7 Match Reports (2026)

With both the Men’s teams having the bye, it was the La Trobe Senior Women who went solo in representing the club over the weekend in Round 7 of Division 1.

The match was away at Whitefriars College, with the Trobers going into the game with the belief of getting their first win of the season in a 7th vs 8th matchup. It was great to have a full bench at our disposal for the first time this season, with some valuable inclusions coming into the side including first year player Amy Milbourne who had recovered from a knee injury.

In the last game before Winter strikes, we got a great look at what some away grounds might look like for the rest of the year, with the middle of the ground a muddy paradise.

The first quarter saw much of the play take place in Whitefriars’ forward half, as they were able to capitalise on their territory gained and take a 3-goal lead into the first break.

The quarter time break was utilised effectively, as the second term saw La Trobe wrestle their way back into the game. Captain Jess Lowry set the tone in the middle, flooring the opposition ruck in a centre bounce contest which lifted the energy around the contest.

Tara Chetcuti found herself in space in the forward 50 and kicked truly to record her first goal as a Trober. Tara’s goal created some momentum for the travelling side, as a Yasmine Budic drive by led to a deep entry inside 50 and a Madi Duffy goal. A Sam Greene tactical move enabled this moment to happen, as our defender turned forward also scored her first goal for the club.

Coming out for the second half, it was a 15-point deficit that La Trobe would need to overcome to earn a victory. A couple of adjustments were made, with Claire Wilson getting her opportunity to become our midfield bull, and she did not disappoint, bringing physicality and pace to the contest. However, Whitefriars would extend their lead going into the final break due to some classy ball movement across each line.

The last quarter was full of dare and desire, but unfortunately the home team would run out winners by 39 points. It wasn’t for a lack of effort, as the pressure and chase remained present throughout the entire last term. Steph Castagnini and Teresa D’Angelo were influential all day and had great defensive moments, however, both were unfortunately unable to complete the game.

It was a day out for defender Eve Conlan, who played her role to perfection. Her attack on the ball and ability to rebound the ball from our defensive 50 on numerous occasions was a joy to watch.

With a week off coming up over the King’s Birthday Weekend, the Senior Women will have an opportunity to get an extra week of rest and preparation for a familiar opponent in Old Carey, who we will face for the first since our pivotal 2025 Preliminary Final win.

It will be a great opportunity for the Trober community to come together for a much-anticipated Trober Triple Header at Tony Sheehan Oval on Saturday 13th of June.
