Match Summary
The Trober men hosted Richmond Central at Tony Sheehan Oval on Saturday afternoon, producing a spirited performance in a heartbreaking one-point defeat, falling 7.11 (53) to 7.12 (54) in one of the tightest contests of the season.
Quarter 1 – La Trobe 32 to Richmond Central 25
The Trobers, who had the advantage of kicking to the city end favoured by the breeze, were on the board inside the opening minute with what looked like a kick off the ground by Josh Guy but was signalled a point by Richmond’s goal umpire. The Snakes responded immediately taking the ball the length of the field to score the opening major of the quarter. Brandon Grech was on song early and getting plenty of possessions before Austin Bennett was able to get goal side of his opponent and Aussie snapped truly for the Trobers’ opening goal.
Richmond Central kicked their second into the wind before Grechy and Cooper McPherson combined to move the ball into our goal square and Josh Horder snapped truly over his shoulder to register our second major and tie the scores. A great tackle by Grechy and he was able to convert from just inside the 50 metre arc before Coop added another with a quick snap from close range to extend the lead to 13 points.
Some desperate defensive efforts by Grechy, Will Barnes and Dylan Robertson Hema in the back half delivered the ball to Coop inside 50 and he added his second major to increase the lead before The Snakes responded with 2 late goals to cut the margin to 7 points at quarter time.
Quarter 2 – La Trobe 40 to Richmond Central 36
The second quarter became an arm wrestle as Richmond Central steadied and gradually worked their way back into the contest. The visitors reclaimed the lead midway through the term before Josh Horder added his second major to wrestle momentum back for the Trobers.
Both sides found scoring difficult in a fiercely contested battle, with La Trobe managing to hold a narrow four-point lead at the main break after a hard-fought second quarter.
Quarter 3 – La Trobe 53 to Richmond Central 43
The Trobers produced arguably their grittiest football of the day in the premiership quarter. After Richmond struck first to reclaim the lead, Austin Bennett responded with an important goal to steady the home side.
While majors proved hard to come by, La Trobe consistently applied pressure and capitalised on repeat forward entries, adding a string of behinds to slowly build their advantage. By three-quarter time, the Trobers had extended their lead to 10 points and looked well placed heading into the final term.
Quarter 4 – La Trobe 53 to Richmond Central 54
The final quarter turned into a tense, low-scoring battle as Richmond Central threw everything at the contest. With pressure rising around the ball and scoring opportunities limited, the visitors chipped away at the margin before a crucial late goal brought them right back into the game.
In a cruel finish for the Trobers, The Snakes levelled the scores deep into the final term before registering the decisive behind in the dying moments to snatch a dramatic one-point victory.
Despite the result, there were strong performances across the ground for the Trobers, with Brandon Grech, Will Barnes, Ronan Carr, Nathan Richardson, Austin Bennett and Cooper McPherson named among the best in a determined team effort.
The Trobers will look to take plenty of positives from a spirited performance against the second top side as they regroup for next week’s away game against Albert Park.

Match Summary
After a week off over the long weekend, the La Trobe Senior Women returned to action at Tony Sheehan Oval to square off against Old Carey. It was a special occasion for the club as we got to celebrate Steph Castagnini, who pulled on the Trober colours for the 100th time.
A special pregame rev up from former player Elise Freeman got the team fired up, while a solid contingent of the Trober army got together to support ‘Casta’ as she tore the banner apart!
Skipper Jess Lowry lost the toss, meaning we would be kicking against a strong breeze to start the contest. A defensive mindset was in place to deal with the conditions, and the gameplan was executed to perfection. It was a great result to go in at Quarter Time with both teams locked at 0 apiece, knowing we had the wind behind us in the 2nd.
A new quarter began, and the tactics shifted in an attempt to put some scoring damage on the board if we could execute, and execute we did! It was a returning game for Kate Bond, whose class was on display as she kicked back-to-back goals to give the Trobers a well-deserved lead.
Things would only get better, as Sam Greene’s forward prodigy Phoebe Radford kicked her first goal for the club. Definitely a moment Phoebe won’t forget! Assistant Coach Darren Wright has done plenty of work with Phoebe in defence but was proud to see her perform well up the other end, even comparing her to the likes of the great Warwick Capper!
At half time, La Trobe took a commanding 19 to 0 lead, with the coach full of praise for her players. However, there was still a second half to play.
For the 3rd Quarter, the objective was to keep Old Carey under 3 goals to protect the lead that was built. And the objective was met, with Othe visitors managing to kick 2 goals to reduce the margin to 4 points at the final break.
It was in the Trober’s hands with the lead and the breeze to their advantage. Despite the pressure and adversity the team faced in the last, they displayed great grit to win their first game of season 2026.
The joy and relief were for all to see, with the occasion of Casta’s 100th match adding to a special day for the side. Additionally, it was awesome to see Tara Chetcuti and Amy Milbourne join Casta in the middle for the song, as the 2 new recruits sung the song for the first time.
Looking ahead to next week, the Senior Women will be on the road to face Power House. It will be a great opportunity to take the win streak to 2, as Casta will be looking to stay undefeated in triple-digit matches played.
Congratulations again to Casta on 100 games!

Match Summary
The Midday Show saw the Trobers host the Richmond Central Snakes on a windy Saturday on Tony Sheehan Oval. We knew going into the game it was going to be tough, as our last matchup saw the Trobers going down by three figures, but we knew if we played defensively and took advantage of the wind, we could have a real crack against The Snakes. This round also saw our selfless captain Lachlan Pike suiting up for game number 50, and Max Rutledge, our American recruit, pulling on the red and black jumper for the last time before heading back home to Washington State, even though our time was short spent with Max, he was a great addition to the team and much loved, and we are very sad to see him go, until next time Max!
The first quarter saw the Trobers kicking against the wind, and after our experience against The Snakes in our 2025 preliminary final, coach Mick Correnti placed an extra in Grant ‘Huss’ Dowler behind the ball, who with his leadership and strong set of hands was able to take multiple intercept marks and led the back six to holding The Snakes to a four goal quarter.
The opening minutes of the second term saw ruckman Alex Crockford win a hit out to advantage to Lachlan Pike who was taken high, Pikey then proceeded to get a clean entry inside 50 which allowed Mitchell Collins to take a tough contested mark thirty metres from goal. Mitch then proceeded to kick truly, bagging the Trobers’ first of the day. The Trobers pressure managed to hold The Snakes goalless in the second term but did not take full advantage of the wind when it came to getting onto the scoreboard, so we still had a long day ahead of us.
The halftime messaging from coach Correnti was that we needed to fall back onto the pressure we had during the first term when The Snakes were kicking with the wind, and if we manage to get on the board, we could make a real push during the fourth. We also needed to take in the feedback from our coaching mentor Leigh Carlson from our Thursday night training session about how to properly guard our direct opponents.
The third term opened with The Snakes kicking two quick goals in the opening five minutes, but after this we found our feet and found that pressure from the first term. This started with Max Rutledge putting his body on the line in his final game taking intercept marks, throwing himself at the ball, and getting countless spoils. Bryce Dowler also used his experience in the backline to take some intercept marks and winning hard balls at high centre half back and allowing the Trobers to make some real forays up the ground.
Going into the final term we saw the Trobers kicking with the wind. Our midfielders Angus Tickner and Sam O’Donnell, who had been fighting tirelessly all day, were winning midfield contests and pushing the ball up forward, but we were unable to convert until the seven minute mark when assistant captain Laughlin Cargnali kicked from the left pocket to kick his first of the day. The fourth term also saw a few more shots at goal but the Trobers still unable to convert these scoring shots.
Ultimately, the task in the fourth term was too large for the Trobers but definitely some positive signs leading into our game next week when we head down to Albert Park to take on The Falcons.
